Tattoo & Permanent Make-Up Removal in Durham

Laser removal and fading of tattoos and permanent make-up, delivered over a course with honest expectations set from the start.

Tattoo removal uses laser energy to break down the ink particles in the skin so the body can clear them naturally. At Zazura in Durham we use a laser system suitable for a range of tattoo colours and skin types, with every course starting with a consultation and patch test.

What this treatment is

The laser emits very short pulses of light that pass through the skin and are absorbed by the tattoo ink.

The energy breaks the ink into smaller fragments, which the body then gradually removes through its natural processes.

Different ink colours respond to different wavelengths, so a multi-wavelength system allows more complete treatment of multi-coloured tattoos.

What it may help with

  • Unwanted tattoos
  • Tattoos that have faded unevenly
  • Partially removed tattoos needing further work
  • Tattoo regret after a change of mind or design

When it may not be suitable

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Active infection, broken skin or inflammation in the treatment area
  • Certain medications, including some that increase light sensitivity
  • A history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring
  • Some medical conditions or recent procedures affecting the treatment area
  • Recent sun exposure, sunbed use or fake tan on the tattoo or surrounding skin
  • Photosensitising medication
  • Certain skin conditions affecting the tattoo area
  • Tattoos that are less than three months old
  • Cosmetic tattoos on the face in some cases

This list is general guidance only. Individual suitability is always determined at consultation, where we review your medical history, medication and skin in person.

How treatment works at Zazura

  • Consultation to assess the tattoo, skin type, colours and medical history.
  • Patch test on a small area to check the skin response and set safe starting parameters.
  • Eye protection is worn by everyone in the treatment room.
  • The laser is applied across the tattoo in controlled passes with cooling where needed.
  • Aftercare is explained and the next session is booked at the appropriate interval.

Consultation and assessment

A consultation and patch test are required. We assess the tattoo size, colour, depth, age, your skin type and any medical factors that may affect treatment, then give a realistic idea of how many sessions may be needed.

What happens at a consultation

The technology we use

Awaiting practitioner review

Device and wavelength details for tattoo and PMU removal to be confirmed by the practitioner before publication.

During your appointment

Most people describe a hot snapping sensation with each pulse, similar to an elastic band snap, against the skin. Cooling is used throughout and the area may feel tender afterwards.

Typical appointment time: Varies by tattoo size; confirmed at consultation.

Afterwards

Redness, swelling and small blisters are common in the first few days. A scab or crust usually forms and must be left to heal naturally. Most people can return to normal activities straight away, following the aftercare advice closely.

  • Cool the area gently if it feels warm or swollen.
  • Keep the skin clean and dry; do not soak in baths, saunas or swimming pools until healed.
  • Do not pick, scratch or rub scabs — let them heal naturally.
  • Apply a high-factor broad-spectrum SPF to the area once healed.
  • Avoid strenuous exercise and heat for the period advised.

Sessions and frequency

Tattoo removal is almost always a course of treatments spaced several weeks apart. The number of sessions depends on the ink colours, density, age, location and how your skin responds.

The tattoo fades gradually across the course. Complete removal is not guaranteed and some colours fade more slowly than others. A test patch and honest expectations are essential before starting.

Common questions

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on the size, colours, density, age and location of the tattoo, as well as how your skin responds. A realistic estimate is given at consultation after assessment.

Can all tattoo colours be removed?

Black and dark inks generally respond best. Some colours, such as greens, yellows and light blues, can be more resistant and may need more sessions.

Will it leave a scar?

When aftercare is followed properly, scarring is uncommon. However, any tattoo that was applied with scarring already present may leave that texture behind. We assess this at consultation.

How long do I wait between sessions?

Sessions are usually spaced several weeks apart to allow the skin to heal and the body to clear the fragmented ink. The exact interval is confirmed at your appointment.
