Whether you are managing a specific health concern or simply looking for something more purposeful than a standard reflexology session, we will take the time to make sure RLD is right for you.
What is reflexology lymph drainage?
Reflexology Lymph Drainage — often referred to as RLD — is a specialist reflexology technique developed by UK reflexologist Sally Kay. It uses a specific sequence of gentle movements applied to the feet, designed to stimulate the lymphatic reflexes found there.
The lymphatic system plays a central role in fluid balance, waste removal and immune function. RLD draws on principles similar to Manual Lymphatic Drainage, but delivers them through the feet rather than through direct work on the body. This may make it an accessible option for people who find conventional bodywork uncomfortable or direct contact difficult.
The session is gentle and deeply relaxing. Sally Kay's RLD method is accredited by the Federation of Holistic Therapists and the Association of Reflexologists.
The research behind RLD
Research into RLD was carried out at Cardiff Metropolitan University with funding from Tenovus Cancer Care. The feasibility study focused on breast cancer-related lymphoedema and found that participants experienced reduced swelling and discomfort during the study period.
The research was published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice. It is important to be clear that the study itself noted results could not be definitively attributed to RLD because it was a feasibility study rather than a full clinical trial.
Who RLD may be suitable for
People managing lymphoedema and lipoedema
RLD may be of interest to people living with secondary lymphoedema, particularly breast cancer-related lymphoedema of the arm. It is also used by some people managing lipoedema. Please tell Maria when you book so she can take your full history and discuss what the treatment might realistically offer.
RLD is a complementary therapy, not a cure or a substitute for medical care. If you have an existing care plan, continue that plan alongside any complementary treatment.
Broader wellbeing uses
Some people choose RLD as a targeted approach to reflexology for relaxation and general wellbeing, with a focus on supporting lymphatic function. Individual responses vary, and we will always be honest about what a treatment can and cannot do.
What to expect
Your appointment begins with a short consultation. Maria will take time to understand your health history, current conditions or treatments and what you hope to get from the session.
You recline comfortably and remain fully clothed apart from your feet and lower legs. Maria applies the RLD sequence using careful, gentle pressure to specific areas of the feet. Many people feel deeply relaxed during treatment, and we leave time for you to rest before heading out.
Each session is 45 minutes, including your consultation, treatment and quiet time at the end.

RLD sessions at Zazura are offered by Maria, our co-founder and qualified Reflexologist & Laser Practitioner. Maria trained in the Sally Kay method of Reflexology Lymph Drainage and is listed on the official RLD register.
Maria works as part of the Zazura family team alongside Samira, bringing the same values we apply across the clinic: honesty, care and time given to each person who comes through the door.
A note on medical conditions
RLD is a complementary therapy. It is not a medical treatment or a substitute for medical care, including care you are receiving for lymphoedema, cancer or another condition.
If you are undergoing active medical treatment or have a condition affecting the lymphatic system, please mention this when booking. Maria will discuss your circumstances and tell you honestly if RLD is not suitable at this time. Individual responses vary and no outcome can be guaranteed.
Common questions
What is the lymphatic system?
The lymphatic system is a network of vessels, nodes and organs that helps maintain fluid balance, supports immune function and removes waste from the body's tissues. Unlike the cardiovascular system, it has no central pump and relies on movement and breathing to circulate lymph fluid.
Is this the same as manual lymphatic drainage (MLD)?
No. Manual Lymphatic Drainage is hands-on bodywork applied directly to the skin. Reflexology Lymph Drainage works through specific reflexes on the feet. They draw on similar principles, but are distinct techniques and feel quite different.
Can I have RLD if I'm currently having cancer treatment?
Please tell us before booking if you are undergoing cancer treatment. Individual circumstances vary, so Maria will discuss your current treatment and medical history before deciding whether RLD is appropriate at this time.
How many sessions might I need?
There is no fixed number. Some people visit once for relaxation, while others choose a short course or periodic sessions. Maria can help you decide what makes sense for your circumstances without pushing you towards more sessions than you need.
