A practical fix for a practical problem
Shaving your own back is close to impossible. Neck ingrowns are painful and keep coming back. Chest hair under gym kit or a wetsuit gets old fast.
Laser hair reduction is a practical answer: a course of sessions that gives long-term reduction of hair in the treated area, so it becomes far less of a daily job. Results vary from person to person.
This guide covers how it works, which areas respond well, what sessions involve and what realistic results look like. For a quick overview, see our For Men page.
Which areas do men commonly treat?
Most men come to us for one or two specific areas. These are the most common.
Back & shoulders
The most requested area for men. Shaving your own back is awkward, and waxing means appointments every few weeks.
Once a course is complete, hair is significantly reduced, and most men need far less upkeep. Back hair is often coarse and dark, which tends to respond well to laser.
Chest
Some men find chest hair uncomfortable during sport — rubbing against kit or trapping sweat. Others simply prefer less of it.
The chest is a large, accessible area that generally responds well to treatment.
Neck & jawline
One of the most useful areas to treat. Ingrown hairs from shaving on the neck and lower jaw can cause ongoing irritation.
Reducing hair density here can mean fewer shave passes, less irritation and a neater neckline that holds its shape for longer.
Neck and jawline treatment can also be used to refine the edge of a beard, so the lines stay defined with less shaping.
Underarms
A quick area to treat — sessions typically take around 10 to 15 minutes — and one where results tend to be among the most consistent.
Face & cheeks
Some men use laser to reduce the shaving area or lower hair density on the face — for example, treating the cheeks while keeping a beard on the chin and jaw.
Facial hair, especially in the beard zone, usually needs more sessions and more patience than body areas. More on that below.
Stomach & abdomen
Less commonly requested, but a reasonable area for men who prefer it clear. Hair here is often finer than on the chest or back, which can affect how many sessions are needed.
How laser hair removal works for men
Laser targets the pigment in the hair. Coarser, darker hair on lighter skin is one of the more straightforward profiles to treat — and that describes much of the hair on a man's back, chest and legs.
The face and neck are more variable. Beard-area hair is influenced by hormones, so it may need more sessions, and some regrowth over time is more likely than on body areas. We'll always explain this before you start.
Skin tone matters too. At Zazura we use a quad-wavelength diode laser, which lets us adjust settings for different skin tones and hair types. Your settings are based on your own assessment, not a template. Read more on our laser hair reduction page.
How many sessions may be needed?
Hair grows in cycles, and laser only affects follicles in the active growth phase. That's why a course of sessions is needed. As a general guide:
- Back and chest: typically 6 to 10 sessions
- Underarms: 6 to 8 sessions
- Neck: 6 to 8 sessions — the beard zone may need more
- Face: allow for 8 or more, depending on the area and hair type
Spacing and results
Sessions are usually spaced 4 to 8 weeks apart, depending on the area and where you are in your course.
Results vary. Hair colour, skin tone, hormones and the area treated all affect how quickly you respond and how much reduction you achieve. Our cost and time calculator can help you plan a course.
What happens during an appointment
Shave the area the day before or on the morning of your appointment. Don't wax or epilate in the weeks beforehand — the hair root needs to be there for the laser to work.
The laser handpiece is moved across the area in passes. A full back takes around 30 to 45 minutes, underarms around 10 to 15 minutes, and a smaller area like the neck less.
Afterwards you can get on with your day. Some mild redness for a few hours is normal. Avoid direct sun on treated areas for a few days after each session.
Over the next two to three weeks, treated hairs shed. That's the treated follicles releasing the hair — not new growth.
Does it hurt?
Most areas are very manageable. The sensation is usually described as a warm snap, like a small elastic band against the skin. It's brief, and most people don't need numbing.
Some areas are more sensitive than others, such as the upper lip. For most men treating the back, chest or neck, discomfort is mild.
Our quad-wavelength diode system lets us balance effectiveness with comfort, with settings chosen for your skin and hair.
Cost
Prices depend on the area and whether you book single sessions or a course. A course usually works out better value, and completing it matters — stopping early can limit your results.
It helps to weigh it up against what you spend on razors, products and time over the same period. See current prices on our prices page, or build an estimate with the cost calculator.
What happens at your first Zazura appointment
Everything starts with a consultation and patch test. We talk about what you'd like to achieve, look at the area and check suitability. The patch test shows how your skin and hair respond to the settings we'd use.
The £20 consultation and patch test is deducted from your first treatment when proceeding.
If you're happy to go ahead, we agree a plan and schedule together. There's no pressure to book on the spot. Find out more about how our consultations work.
Getting started
If you've been thinking about it for a while, a consultation is the simple next step. It doesn't commit you to anything — we look at the area, give you an honest picture of what's realistic, and you decide from there.
Not sure where to start?
Book a consultation and patch test, talk through the area you'd like treated, and get realistic advice on expected results and how often you'd need sessions — before deciding whether to continue.

Frequently asked questions
How many laser sessions do men need?
As a general guide, 6 to 10 sessions for the back and chest, 6 to 8 for the underarms and neck, and often 8 or more for the face. Results vary, and we'll give you a realistic idea at your consultation.
Does men's laser hair removal hurt?
Most men find it very manageable. It feels like a brief warm snap, similar to a small elastic band against the skin. Most people don't need numbing.
Can men have laser on their back?
Yes. The back and shoulders are the most requested areas for men, and coarse, dark back hair generally responds well to laser.
Can laser help reduce shaving-related ingrown hairs?
Reducing hair density on areas like the neck and jawline can mean fewer shave passes and less irritation, which many men find helps with ingrowns. Results vary.
Can you shape a beard with laser?
Yes — treating the neck, cheeks or jawline can help keep beard edges defined with less shaping. Facial hair usually needs more sessions than body areas.
How long does men's laser hair removal take?
It depends on the area. A full back takes around 30 to 45 minutes, underarms around 10 to 15 minutes, and smaller areas like the neck less. Sessions are usually 4 to 8 weeks apart.
Do I need to shave before laser hair removal?
Yes — shave the area the day before or on the morning of your appointment. Don't wax or epilate in the weeks beforehand.
Is a patch test required?
Yes. Every laser course starts with a £20 consultation and patch test, deducted from your first treatment when proceeding.
